manipulating imported STEP objects continues to be an adventure that always ends up "feeling" clumsy and convoluted. given the proficiency of the user, I'm hoping someone can share some process thoughts on how to go about replicating, orienting, and locating imported STEP objects in a quicker more satisfying manner. to date the most common version of this adventure involves importing STEP models of fasteners and then having to "distribute" a number of fastener models in an assembly model. the attached collage is representative, a bolted assembly in need of fasteners and flat washers.................. currently the job eventually gets done but when the adventure is over I always feel like my hands need a thorough washing!

Hi Art

Have you tried the Align or Insert face tool?

The align tool will center one cylindrical object with another.

The insert tool will align and mate in one tool.

Tim-

thanks! hadn't found or tried the "align face tool". adopting a walk before you run strategy, I attempted to "assemble" a single fastener with a washer both on the same layer. selected faces are shown in the attached collage as well as the "result"......?

assuming the fastener/washer are eventually "assembled", how is that assembly replicated and relocated? none of the faces seem accessible when grouped...........

Hi Art

I made you a quick video showing the Insert tool with a nut/bolt/washer that might help explain the tool further.

http://www.csi-concepts.com/Demo/videos/Insert.mp4

The key is picking cylinder faces to align into the hole, and then planar faces to mate with with any offset needed.

Tim

Tim-

I'm unable, even with the benefit of your video, to "assemble" the fastener and washer in the attached file. is it me or does the downloaded fastener file need to be augmented to use the "assembly tool" ?? the fastener model is straight from McMaster-Carr and representative of the downloaded solid models I'd like to be able to manipulate and replicate......

I will add this example at the end of the video this weekend. Because of the thread, you need pick the cylindrical head face to align with.

Wow this is nice, wish I had know about this on my last project. If only there was a full video course on ViaCad, I have been using if for 2 years now and feel like I have barely scratched the surface of what it can so.

Thanks for the videos Tim, they help me a lot.

rokoko-

thanks; circles were the source of my grieve.....!!

given a number of fasteners, does each hole, fastener, and washer need to be done individually?

... yes, I did it too. But please don't ask me how .... ;-)

H.

PS: I tried it out an other time, it is "a version" of rokokos solution: 2x align, center vertical & horizotal.
both parts must be selected, first the vertical centering and than horizontal centering.

I updated the video to show more examples.

1. Insert Face
2. Simplify then Insert Face
3. Translate and 3 Point Rotate

Also attached is the file used in the video if you want to try it out. The video and file were made with SharkCAD Pro build 1335 which is now ready for testing.
