Hi Rand.
Lots of people would like to help you but the question is too vague, either provide a description of your steps and what you are trying to do or perhaps a screenshot with your question.
This is a Cad drawing program forum, not a psychic, crystal ball forum..

Rand,
You have to hold down the 'CNTRL' or 'OPTION' key
when you 'MIRROR' to keep the original, but as Maify
suggested, more information would be helpful.

Sorry about that! I put my question in the title instead of the body of the post. And thanks so much for the quick response to my post! That's certainly encouraging.

Holding Ctrl while selecting the mirror location did the trick. Is that the proper way to do it?

Yes that is the way to do that function. The ctrl key is used in several tools. When you activate a tool look up in the top and tool hints show for some if these type of tools
