I'm finding that fX9 struggles with importing STEP and .sat files that FX8 copes well enough (patience permitting)
with. Dumb by definition, but lots of faces/features, 250Mb STEP from FreeCAD, saves as 68Mb .sat in TurboCAD (64-bit). Saved as .sfx in V8, they're much slimmer than both neutral formats, and can be opened in V9 snappily without a hitch, but it's an instinctive assumption that access to more memory should make FX9 able to access larger files and more quickly in any circumstance than V8.

I saw your post and did some tests.

FIle : Nissan GTR 2020 from GrabCAD
STEP Size : 196 MB

V9 Import = 495 seconds
V9 Save No Facets = 65.8 MB


V8 Import = 1394 seconds
V9 Save No Facets = 62.5 MB

This particular STEP file was 2.8 times faster on 9 vs 8.

Maybe it is the STEP file. Would it be possible for me to have access to the STEP file you are comparing?

Also, is this Mac or PC?

Thanks Murray for the example file. This is now fixed in 1156. And now faster then v8.

Tire Read V8 = 22 minutes
Tire Read V9 (1156) =13 minutes

Hello Tim!

When will the next build be available?
I've got the problem, that I've can't import an sculpted model from Cinema 4D.
I've tried an export as .stl and .obj.
But I can see only one bar from the progress bar at the import.
I've waited around 10 min. but I don't see a progress.

The .stl and .obj was approx. 200MB in size.

I'm working on the 1156 build right now. I plan to have a ViaCAD Pro w/PowerPack and Shark FX Sp1 beta build available this weekend. Both builds look pretty good for issues fixed.

Hi René,

That is a big file with 2M facets and 8 M vertices! Below is the OBJ converted to a solid with some booleans using PowerPack. More on how I did it a bit…

Can I use the images in a tutorial? Or is this model private?

This is the biggest file I've processed to date.

Hi Tim!

How long did it take to load the .obj to Shark?
I can't import that file (1155), or maybe I'm waited a
to small amount of time. But over 10 minutes?

The file is from a guy called Eric Smit. I've
contacted him about using his file in a tutorial.
I will let you know.

When will the new build of Shark been available?

About 40 seconds in 1157. But I've done some optimization for large mesh files that may have helped.

I"ve made some significant improvements to time spent displaying large meshes. The dragon file now displays much smoother especially with edges displayed.

As soon as I've tested more files and confirmed I didn't break some other feature I'll send it out. I'm thinking 1157 this weekend.

I got the slow read to repeat on Windows release builds. Did not repeat on Windows development builds. I tracked it down to how Windows allocates small chunks of memory. With 2M facets and 8M vertices it becomes noticeable. I changed the algorithm to be more Windows friendly in 1157 and it's much faster now.

I also found and repaired a couple of issues with the OBJ reader related to small tolerances. I can now read the 2M facet version and convert to a solid without preprocessing it through 3D-Coat (tested on Mac, still need to confirm Windows conversion). It took all night and a ton of memory however!
