Ok played around some more and I almost have it. But if you look close, there is a little step where the inside fillet meets the next thread

Did you use the fillet tool for the profile? Draw the flanks, then copy them one pitch length. Fillet the original and the copy, then enclose the original flanks, the nose fillet and the valley fillet. You've got the valley out of register somehow, because the fillet should meet symmetrical flanks.

I think so, I was just looking at the lines that you drew. The top line that is .125 long, shouldnt that be 90 degrees from the longer line? I clicked on it and it says it is 8. something degrees in the angle box. If I make it 90 degrees to the other do you think that will take care of it?

Someone else who feels my PAIN! :)

I think it's partly due (upload problems) to the file being rather big, but I don't get why this stupid crippled forum server disallows this, because after all, being able to share and discuss work is a sure fire way to increased understanding and a better product.

Awesome bolt wpd! Any chance of adding to my thread with a tutorial to how you made yours?

best,

Tom :)

I could not have done it without all the help from others.

Here is my feable attempt at helping others with drawing the bolt. I have struggled with this for a long time, and now that I somewhat figured it out, with a lot of help on here I might add, I thought I would try to help others that may be struggling. I am just a hobbyist, so I am sure there are better ways to do it, but this is what worked for me.

Thanks
Walt

I could not resist the temptation of drawing a nut to go along with the bolt.

Hi Walt,
I usually make a profile using data from Machinery's Handbook, Major Dia., Minor Dia, and Pitch Dia. I make one for external threads and one for internal threads.
I then make a "threaded rod" for external and internal threads, and use them for threaded parts and threaded holes.
I don't worry too much about the radius in the root on threads produced in metal, I don't have much experience with plastic threads, so I don't know. I cut threads in metal on the lathe using a single point tool with little or no radius on the end.
Enclosed are the files for 10-32, I have others if you are interested.

Hi Walt,
I used your profile, added thread runout and chamfers for your .250-20 hex head bolt.

Hi Walt, I imported a CU2 file into your Viacad file to show the steps. It's just a generic thread. The chamfers are done with a revolve surface and a trim or subtract solid.
