Can someone kindly point me in the direction of a chart that outlines the differences in the different Punch CAD packages out there (VC/Shark range?)

Ta!

I have just noticed that the "Product Comparison Matrix" for VC pro as changed, if you click that link it actually gives you a "Competitive Product Matrix" against Autocad LT and 2009.
Should the name of the link not show that?

Steve, I think that's yet another link, because I've come across both too.

N.

Would this be an accurate summary of the comparison matrix?

ViaCAD 2D: Basic 2D drafting program.
ViaCAD 2D/3D: Adds basic 3D modeling.
ViaCAD Pro: Adds a lot more 3D modeling tools.
Shark LT: Minimal but important additions for an enterprise environment.
Shark: Adds parametrics (and a few other features).
Shark FX: Adds the photorealistic renderer.

A different thread here implied another change: ViaCAD can only be installed/activated/licensed on a single computer at a time. Shark can be ready to use on multiple computers as long as only one copy is executing at a time. In other words, Shark could be installed on a desktop for office use and a laptop for field use. ViaCAD can't. Is this correct?

Shark LTs precise 2D drawing derivation of the model resp. section cut instead of the polylines VC creates could be handy even for non-commercials.

as I understood on max. 2 concurrent systems only, which does cover your described environment.

FX adds CATIA and ProE exchange and some capping and lofting tweaks above Shark, as well as the rendering. $500 seems a good price for those.

I was unaware of that. Have you got info on what the "capping and lofting tweaks" are?

IMHO, the render engine requires a serious update, which I think they are doing for V6. As for it being a good price, well, it can be, when the product can be purchased a lot cheaper (by almost $700) from a 3rd party vendor

Woah! That's 700!! (about 500 off what it is from CSS). Is that price legal??

There are lots of places selling Shark /VC etc at much lower prices then here at punch, such as at that website I linked to, you can get shark LT for $200 (which is cheaper then my upgrading from VC pro to Shark LT if purchased from Punch).

I mentioned here my curiosity concerning the price charged by punch compared to 3rd party vendors.

I'm almost speechless.

I'm also somewhat annoyed, especially, as many of these offers seem to be in America only. FWIW, Amazon UK is utter crap, especially when you compare it to its US counterpart.

Steve, I'm extremely grateful for sharing this info with us. Tim, I'd be most interested to hear you thoughts on this as well.

Back when I was in the software industry and privy to the pricing practices (20+ years ago), a local computer store would sell product at 100% of MSRP. The store would get the product from a distributor (often Ingram Micro) at 60% of MSRP. The distributor would in turn have paid the publisher 40% of MSRP. If you can find a "store" that is willing to earn very little per sale...

The data sheets say that the extra tweaks and CATIA and ProE exchange first show up in Shark (ie LT doesn't have them). Is the data sheet wrong?

I was wrong about it only being FX, the capping and lofting tweaks are guides, shared with Shark. CATIA and ProE translators too.

I thought so.
The "FX" is just to show added rendering/walk through animation.

It will be interesting to see what updates are made in that area. As it is, it is years behind most renderer's.

Actually when I think about it, this has got to have more to do with SFX just not selling very well. We already know just how terrible Punch Software's marketing dept is? I suppose as long as Tim can still code, and Nick is still punching numbers into his Blackberry, it doesn't really matter that much?
