Guys,

I'm trying to export decent quality dwg files, but I just can't get the resolution high enough as all my curves seem to be broken down into lines not curves, and the resulting output isn't very nice.

These need to be presentation quality, and they're not.

Any suggestions? Please?

Tom

Which version are you exporting as - is it v12 by any chance?

AFAIK, all settings are on "SuperFine"

What are you reading the dwgs into ?

I think this is where you need to check resolution

Vector curves (as produced by CAD programs like Shark) have infinite resolution (as I understand - but maybe I'm wrong) - unlike printed and display curves, which may have limited resolution.

The trade-off is made to speed up performance in the case of displays and with printers is typically limited to the resolution of the device

I don't think that's the problem Jol. I've just tried importing into AutoCAD 2013, same result. Threw the resolution up to maximum. Same result.

Just trying to convert to Bezier, to see what that does.

Nope. Bezier just makes a total mess.

I understand where you are coming from, but this is most definitely a ViaCAD 'problem'. Exporting to .ai, same result.

As Jol says, things like Superfine etc, are just display resolutions and aren't a reflection of the quality of the geometry.

Circles and suchlike are exported as true circles, not polygons as they appear onscreen.

Hmmm ... I've exported quite a few things to dwg recently without problem

not sure what to suggest

what's your build number and app ?

I have done 2d work and exported it to .dwg.

The approach I take is change the resolution by checking even distribution.

After that, I change the curve type on all the curves to polylines. I know the circles do not turn to be circles but the resolution say on eDrawings is noticeable and better shown as a circle yet it is made of lines.

Actually, exporting to dwg produce good geometry, but when you open the file on auto cad is displayed as low resolution that "seems" as lines, but jus displayed that way, try this on auto cad: select all geometry, enter scale, and do a scale by factor 1 of all elements, i mean, they will remain the same size, so you don't worry to loose your dimensions, this action will change the displayed resolution and shows the curve as should, i mean, an arc will be displayed as an arc, spline as spline, ellipse as ellipse and so, (well, almost, they are still displayed a little bit as lines), and not as a group of lines.

Other way to change resolution is do /view/regen all from the main menu

I don't really know why auto cad interprets the resolution this way from files from shark-viacad, it should be some kind of embedded preference, but, definitely, the geometry of the draw is fine (except from the fact that the profile of the curves are split as individual curves, not joined),

Sorry for the delay. Had to pick the kids up from school.

I think I know the source of this problem- perhaps.

I've been using model to sheet, and exporting DWG out of that- so everything's nicely laid out first. My 2D cad programs are too weak to deal with orthographic projection and the like from a single 3D dwg/dxf solid. For most things this is fine, but for job interviews, many sided polygons instead of real circles is unacceptable (at least it is in my book).

As engineers we've not really bothered, but to others it can look sloppy (especially when displayed on a website). If you see what I mean?

I wish the vector quality of model to sheet was of a high enough quality that I could do this. Then all those VCP files could be set exactly right, and it would greatly speed up workflow, by just exporting from ViaCAD and opening up in QCad/whatever.

Hi Luis. I tried regen all, but it didn't help. I'll try scaling- but I'm a novice at AutoCAD

Rocky. Interesting suggestions. I'll give those a pop too.

I like ViaCAD too much to give up now. :)

PS, output with just straight lines (of course) look dynamite. Just let down by the curves. I was hoping there was a setting to change this somewhere.... still looking...

Except for R12, we do not export the display list to DWG or DXF. DWG supports precise definitions of curves, surfaces and solids. IE DWG curves, surfaces and solids are resolution independent.

For example, a circle is exported as a center point, radius, and normal. Likewise a spline is exported as a set of NURB control points, weights etc.

Perhaps it may be a resolution issue on the system that is reading the file?

When you reimport to ViaCAD / Shark how does it look then ?

If you are using model to sheet in ViaCAD all curves and circles are polylines not precise lines. Only Shark has precise lines in model to sheet.

Okay. I tried all the suggestions, none of which worked, although Rocky's suggestion did look slightly better.

This first PDF is what Autocad printed off (and then opened up in Preview). The arrows in red show two circles drawn by Autocad, the green one being the one exported from ViaCAD. The lines are still there. Autocad gave me a proper circle.

I then tried Jol's suggestion of importing back into ViaCAD. Same result. Green circles drawn in AutoCAD, other clunkier circle drawn originally in ViaCAD.
