Hello, Tim
Congratulations for your new great product, ViaCAD!
I've bought it recently and very happy with it. I've a question about upgrade path to Concept 3D. Can we upgrade to Concepts 3D later or we have to buy a new license?
This is a lovely product at the unbelievable price! :D

Thanks, we're pretty exciting about ViaCAD and the price/feature set it provides for $99.00. I've asked the marketing/sales guys and will let you know what I find out.

I was wondering the same thing...any word back from your team?

The answer was yes, but they are still debating the discounted price.

Hmmm... I bought Concepts Unlimited yesterday... should I have waited a little bit longer?

I've been so impressed with ViaCAD that my curiosity is piqued about the added power of Concepts Unlimited. Are the additional tools worth the (gulp) $1696? I do a LOT of translating geometry from one package to another - are the file import/export tools more robust in CU? The ability to "dismantle" solids into individual surfaces is also important to me. It seems from the "Product Comparison Matrix" that CU really only offers four additional advanced modeling tools over Concepts 3d:
>Cover with Guides X
>Lofting with Guides X
>Feature Patterns X
>MicroScribe Digitizer X
So would the purchase of C3d be the best upgrade path, especially for someone who doesn't need yet another weak raytracer? Or is the renderer more than just an old Lightworks module?

Or should I just wait for Rhino on the Mac? So many questions. Any answers out there?

Why not download the demos and give them a try that way you can see for yourself rather than taking other peoples word.

Good idea. I ended up purchasing Concepts3d - I am working on a project for rapid prototyping that needed it's more powerful surface tools. If I had previously bought Unlimited, I'd be a little miffed. The combined cost of ViaCAD and C3d is $594 USD - for which you get 90% of the functionality of CU, sans rendering. $1200 just for Lightworks rendering? You could buy modo 203 or Maxwell for that and have a fantastic GI renderer and money left over for beer.

Punch! really needs to sit down with Tim and figure out the pricing structure on the Design Unlimited product line. Oh, and when I registered C3d, it was via the old CSI site. Punch!, Design Unimited, CSI - who the hell am I actually buying this software from, anyway? A cohesive corporate identity would surely help in marketing these sweet programs.

Agreed. But remember, they always were CSI, before Punch bought them. This is a relatively new development, and will take some time to smooth over.

plus:
- MTS (!)
- misc. adv. surface tools
- Catia & Pro/E data exchange filters (some competitors are already charging more than 1,200.- U$ for)

and the warm fuzzy feeling being a user of the flagship product ;)

Ahh... figured I was missing something. I did a google search for MTS and didn't come up with anything. Can you elucidate?

Thanks for the info.

Must be "Model to Sheet", I guess. Although this feature is also present in VC, in CU it includes a "precise hidden line" option, which generates true bezier vector curves for HL renderings.

I'm pretty sure the same functionality is in ViaCAD... maybe a bit less robust?

Here is a product matrix.

http://www.punchcad.com/product...unchCADProductMatrix.pdf

Concepts uses a technology licensed from Dassault's Catia V5 for generating precise curves for 2D sheet drawings. ViaCAD uses a hidden line technology that is part of ACIS which generates polylines.

I've just bought ViaCad and would also be very interested in upgrading to concepts 3D.
