I can get the cross section through a traditional split of a solid and extract of face geometry, but if there is an easier way or a tool specifically for that I would be interested to hear of it.

Yep, you can cut a section...

First you need to add an infinite plane where you want the section cut.

Then you can cut the section. See the pic below...

I tried that procedure and it works fine. I suppose I need to test more of the surface tools to see the behavior on a solid.
