How can I find the average curve between two existing curves that might not be co-planar but close?

For example I have two curves going in slightly different directions but I want to find the average slope ? I want to find a way to "blend" between the two curves so I get one in the center.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Build a ruled surface between the two curves, convert the surface to curves and trace an interpolated curve through the midpoints of the rulings is how I'd do it with VC/Shark.

*edit* just tried it and convert to curve only delivers edges, but converting to mesh gives intermediate vertices.
