why keep 2? attributes,

[COLOR="Red"]pattern and styles.[/COLOR]

Antoine,

Pattern defines only the line pattern, while a style can define color, weight and line pattern.

Hello Antoine

A pen pattern only refers to the dot/dash/space pattern, one of several attributes for a curve.

The style refers to all the attributes of a curve including:
pen pattern
pen weight
pen color
pen arrows

Another nice feature about styles is that they are associative. If you change the style definition, all objects using that style update.
