Very interesting discussions, and I am encouraged by what I have read. I have just looked at the video on the viacad website, and it shows a multi-coloured model aero engine, followed by a polymer model produced by an stl process. The model 'looks' like it is separate components, but I can't be sure. Does viacad allow assemblies at all? I don't expect this feature in software which is inexpensive, but it would be nice! I don't think you do an 'introduce this part in' kind of thing that you can do with Solidworks for eg. Yes it would be really nice, and I too would love to see how this is done, as I feel the manual doesn't really explain. Yes there is a small amount on mates. but not enough- with little examples too.

The user controls data via layers. Most folks use the translate and rotate tools for placing parts. However, there are rudamentry mate, align, and insert commands.

Imagine I am designing a Deck. 1. After I create a 2x12x16' sill, then 2x8x8' joists, can I then easily align the joist against the sill with the joist ends mating and aligning with the sill and the board lengths being at 90 degree orientation? 2. I assume you can create and store components (example - 2x12x16' board) in a separate folder (Library), and then copy them into the design you currently are working on? 3. If answer to 2 is Yes, once copied into the current drawing, can the dimensions (say length) be changed in the current drawing only, without changing the component in the Library? 4. If answer to 3 is Yes, assume I have copied the same component multiple times into the current drawing. If I change the dimension of a single copy, does it change all the copies in the drawing? 5. Concerning constraints, relationships, dependencies, or whatever you call them: Say I create a box with two sides parallel. Can I then lock the Parallel requirement for those two sides so that they stay parallel if I make other changes to the shape of the box? Can you lock angles, separation distances, etc.?

(Duplicate along a path or snap to points) 2&3 Yes 4. No, each instance that you bring in enter into a drawing is considered an independant object. 5. ViaCAD does have a lock option for objects, but that will not allow you to change anything on that object.
