I'm new to CAD and, of course, to ViaCad. I'm running under Windows Vista Home Premium. My computer has an NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card.

I had a huge problem with garbage on the display, especially when the logicursor was active.

Here are some remedies I found that might save another newbie some headaches. None of this is mentioned in the manual, it probably applies only to computers similar to mine.

  • If you have NVIDIA graphics, be sure to set your graphics card up to 'Let the application decide' for the image settings. This is done on the NVIDIA Control Panel, not in ViaCAD.

  • On the Windows Control Panel
    Advanced Tools; Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows; Visual Effects tab;

    Set this to 'Adjust for best performance', or at least uncheck all the Vista graphics features that you are willing to live without.

This made ViaCAD run much better for me.

By the way, when I click on a .vc3 file, ViaCAD opens, but not the file. I just get Untitled 1. The default for .vc3 is set to ViaCAD but it doesn't work for me. Anybody got a fix?

A few other fixes, until Vista has 100% compatible video drivers.

1. Set compatibility mode to Win XP sp2
2. Check Disable desktop composition

both are done by right clicking on the ViaCAD icon and selecting properties, then the compatibility tab.

Also, ViaCAD files can only be opened from the file/open option, not from a double click of the file, that is as designed.
