I am using CTRL on the 2nd selection. I pull that object away and see the subtraction, but as soon as I let go the subtraction adds itself back. Is this normal? Did I miss a step?

Yes. You just removed the cylinder from the sphere so it is no longer intersecting the sphere. Therefore it can't be subtracted any more.

But isnt use of CTRL-SELECT on 2nd object mean to subtract it from the 1st AND retain the 2nd object, thus allowing the subtraction to happen so I can then move my 2nd object?

In 1st post, subtract would just create a hole. Subtract+retain (use of CTRL key on select) would bore the hole and you are left with a rod in the hole that was made in the sphere.


What would be the point of subtraction+retain if you cant move the 2nd object?

Here's the vid of a std subtraction (seems normal), the subtract-from (1st object selection) remains with the hole and the 2nd object is removed.

ctrl-select means the 2nd object still appears on the screen thus it answers both your questions. It leaves a rod in the hole but as soon as you move it around it will still keep subtracting. If you move it away from the intersection, it won't subtract a thing.

in your third question you said what's the point if you can't move the 2nd object. I'm not sure where this is going and you are contradicting yourself. In your first video, you moved it so it is possible to move it.

My point was, if I make a CTRL-select subtraction then what's the point of doing the subtraction of two intersecting solids if after I do subtraction I leave everything as-is?

I want to make subtraction and then move my subtracting solid somewhere else to make another subtraction on another object, etc.

It's just control to drag copy using the gripper. So you put your subtraction shape in, hold control drag out a copy of it, and move it to a new position to subtract again. Is this what you are doing?

right, you need to drag duplicate with the gripper or duplicate with history and put it wherever you want to subtract again. Alternatively, you can break associativity of the subtraction and can drag the cylinder if you don't want to copy.
