Seems to be true for all pipes where the internal diameter intersects.

Yes this is a limit to the tool. If the path self intersects, it cannot subtract the inside. Same limit for a circular section.

Shelling will fail as well because it is not a valid part. (ambiguous inside/outside surfaces). Because of the ambiguity, I also don't think it is manufacturable.

I did notice that if the sweep profile contained the inside profile, it will sweep. This avoids the subtract or shell post steps. I'll look into this.

You could try to cut away and repair the self-intersecting part and shell it afterwards
