It will be great if we can show the ideas or designs to our customers trough the ipad, so we can rotate the model, some render, take notes.

so you don't need to carry with you laptop.

I'm hardly one to promote microsoft, but let's not forget that HP's Slate will be out in a few months, so it should be supported, too. That being said, I hope that Time and company feel that they should tend toward some sort of filter that is as OS-agnostic as possible so that Linux users who are in CAD and help their Linux-oriented users use Slate out in the field can do so as well. Without WINE, without emulation layers.

Does anyone know of small utilities that allow manipulation of DXF and a few other CAD files and is small enough to fit in a simple kernel or GUI on iPad and Slate? Considering that BricsCAD, VariCAD, and CADSchroer are some who are entering (BC) or alread have stable foot prints (Vari & Schroer), i wonder whether Punch! Software will make a lightweight viewer, or even a ViaCAD lite like AutoCAD Lite. I wonder if it is safe to assume/presume that AutoDesk will quickly support the iPad or just Slate, or both in an attempt to hedge their bets against outside pressure on a popularity war.

This is going to come off as very snarky, but . . . .

There is no way that an HP slate running Win 7, or a desktop Linux variant is going to replicate the experience of a tightly integrated piece of hardware / software such as the iPad. The reason that slate computers have always failed in the past is because they have been based on desktop OS's which are designed to be used with a mouse. The iPad and iPhone by contrast were conceived entirely as touch based devices, and Apple is the only major company that designs its own hardware AND software and can therefore control the integration of the two into a device that vanishes when you use it and becomes entirely about the task at hand.

He states better than I why the iPad/iPhone get preferential treatment from the media giants and why I don't really care if the "Windows 7 prototypical tablet that had to wait 5 years before it could be made" HP Slate gets any of the same. If I'm not mistaken, the HP Slate will get a generic desktop browser anyway, so of what need would there be for optimized media?

As to Linux, I don't really see those users as a particularly important segment of the market for paid and subscription media. The same could as well be said for the limited availability of applications in the market.

Nope. You can with a 64-bit Windows tablet, though, even a cheap one.
