PowerPack 10 contains a new tool for flattening/unfolding developable surfaces.

https://youtu.be/gpXTYPN38eU

I'm not sure whether I should leave the ability to flatten any mesh in the final version which leaves the results to the designer to keep. Feedback appreciated.

Attached is a file with examples for you to experiment with the unfold tool and build 1303 (uploading tonight....).

It works really well with the examples you supplied, and it worked well with some random ruled surfaces that I created. But it failed when I tried it on cylindrical sections produced as fillets on solids, returning zero areas as the "after" results. I tried various methodologies like using the fillet surfaces' edges as profiles for ruled surfaces, but that didn't help, and I also tried subtracting patches from those ruled surfaces, which got a "doesn't appear to be a ruled surface" error.
By flattening, do you mean unfolding meshes as opposed to unrolling developable ruled surfaces? I'd like to see it stay, with improvement over what's there at the moment. It's not unfolding subD meshes ATM, only the control mesh, which can be worked around by exporting the subD as .obj and reimporting, then unfolding the import. You can always get a result from unfolding a mesh, when surfaces aren't strictly developable, mesh resolution determines the accuracy.

Many thanks Murray for the feedback, this really helps!

Build 1303 is now ready for download. It has many improvements to the unfold from 1302 including some tolerance accumulation issues. Plus it now "fans" out from the selected facet.

If you could post any file that appears to be developable and fails that would be fantastic from 1303. Those should not fail. I will take a look at the fillet.

>>It's not unfolding subD meshes ATM
Ok will fix.

>>By flattening, do you mean unfolding meshes as opposed to unrolling developable ruled surfaces?
Looking at other products, they seem to use flatten and unroll for the same task of unrolling a developable surface. Rhino seems to use unroll in the same context we're using.

>>You can always get a result from unfolding a mesh, when surfaces aren't strictly developable, mesh resolution determines the accuracy.
Yes. The resulting facets may overlap depending on the mesh and where you selected the start facet.
Smoothly flowing quads produce some nice results.

Thanks Murray, much appreciated!

i think i bought the pro version of Powerpack, could not see an other one.
and if so, how can i upgrade ?

PowerPack Pro is only available from EvoSoft. It is not available from Encore. This gives us some more flexibility in the feature set of PowerPack Pro as well as how often we provide updates.

We're still putting some final touches on the ViaCAD Pro with PowerPack Pro build.

If you purchased PowerPack Pro 9, you will receive PowerPack Pro 10 free as part of your upgrade to ViaCAD 10 from EvoSoft.

If you purchased PowerPack 9/10 and interested in PowerPack Pro 10, EvoSoft has an upgrade path.

I'm very excited to get the update out to the community!

Just noticed this new feature and have been eagerly waiting for it. however I'm wondering if there's a way to unroll (I guess its not called unfold anymore?) the entire volume without having to individually click on each surface? Reason I ask, for more complex faces, one might have trouble easily ensuring every face is clicked on.

Also when I unroll multiple items, the resulting 2D geometry appears to all overlap at 0,0,0
