I´d like to suggest a special little mirror-triade that appears in the modeling window when symmetry is switched on.
It can be moved and rotated to define location and direction of the mirroring.
Every time I try to set symmetry I start all over again.
It´s not intuitive at the moment....

I agree with you Albano !
And the same could be used for the mirror tool....
