So after a great deal of of wrestling with curves with gaps when trying the split and trim surfaces I found something that works good. I've struggles with getting the connect curve tool to work in many instances.

When trying to trim a surface with a another profile, in the form of curves that were exploded from another surfaces or that come from surface intersections, extrude those curves into surfaces. The gaps will remain so splitting the desired surface will not split clean. Change object those extruded surfaces so they are individual surfaces and join them back together. This will take care of the gaps I find and splitting surfaces works. YAY
