I have extruded a profile and then cut it with different parallel cutters to produce the desired object as a solid. I now wish to be able to flatten one of the surfaces so that I can produce a flat profile that will wrap around a mould to make the object.

I can wrap a flat shape around a profile to produce an item. I'm stuggling to go from the item to the flat shape in reverse.

Any suggestions?

Sadly not. I can do that.

I am trying to do exactly the opposite. I have my final form. I have the profile of the form about which I would want to wrap a flat shape to make the final form. I just need to be able to get the flat form.

I have a very nice piece of specialist software which I use for designing from flat panels (ie tortured ply, or cutting up elements of cloth and stitching them together to provide the right shape) and this does the job wonderfully - even giving me a CNC layout from which to cut all the flat panels. But I have this design in SharkFX and would really like to be able to unfold the design into the flat shape.

So you are using other software to wrap a flat shape around a profile?

I did ask about this some years ago as I wanted to wrap an image of the world around a sphere but Tim told me it could not be done, that was some time ago though so it may be possible now.

I would also like to know if there is a way to do it.

No. I use other software specifically for maritime design because it is used for developing hull sections from conical projections (as used to torture ply and steel or aluminium panels without distortion). I use SharFX for wrapping a flat section around a profile - that works great so long as you have the right flat section.

If you need to do this then a) look into the rendering system as I think that Lightworks has been wrapping images around objects for a couple of decades but this is highly unlikely to be documented within Shark or b) contact me via http://www.quru.com/contact/ or send a direct message and I'll point you in the direction of the other package. This is a Punch!CAD forum and Tim would not appreciate competitive products (however niche) being discussed here! All I need say is that if this other product were so good, I'd not be using SharkFX!

If your surface sections are truly conical and use Windows, TurboCAD Platinum can unwrap them I use Shark FX and TC Plat because they're complementary, they've diverged rather than converged in recent times. Windows only for TC Plat, though. Unbending cylindrical sheet sections, unfolding cylindrical and conical sections, and UV wrapping are TC Plat capabilities that Shark doesn't have. Pilot3D impresses me as an inexpensive tool that'll do this, and it goes beyond "developable" to a degree of what its writer calls "expandability", acknowledging that materials can exhibit limited stretch. (Panels of globes can be expanded. There's got to be "tears" in the panels. Rips, not crying!). Again, Win only. Development and expansion can also be done manually using Shark's ruled surface and mesh triangulation. Takes time and a little experience to satisfy degree of accuracy. It can also be done manually from arc length if you can find the conical/cylindrical axes. If you want a one-off here and now, post the cylindrical/conical section and I'll help out.

Thanks Murray but this is all being done on a Mac. Besides, the object that I need to upwrap is not conical - apologies if bringing that up has muddled the issue. I have some other software that I use for hull design that upwraps tortured panels. No the issue is very simple. I developed a profile from the top view. I extruded it at an angle. I then have created two other profiles, one from the side and one from the font, extruding both these. I have then subtracted these from the first extrusion leaving an object of the right shape. I now just need to unwrap this so that I can see what the flat section would be before it is wrapped around a profile.

I'll have a look at Shark's ruled surface and mesh triangulation but I was hopeing to just change the solid into a surface (or series of surfaces) and then be able to flatten out those surfaces...
