Hi, new to ViaCad and just been working through the tutorials.
I have imported a 2D .DXF file that I need to make a 3D model from. I can't extrude any faces in the drawing because the DXF is made up of lots of line and arc segments.
How do I join them so ViaCad will recognise them as faces?
Thanks
Joram

Hi Joram

You can select all the lines with select chain to select all the lines when prompted from the extrude tool. As long as all the segments are connected with no gaps

"You can select all the lines with select chain to select all the lines when prompted from the extrude tool. As long as all the segments are connected with no gaps"
I've tried to do this but can't get it to work. Is there any chance you could explain in more detail. I haven't had any prompting from the extrude tool (using push/pull- assume that's correct?)
Just to explain further, I am trying to model an electric guitar neck. I have imported a .DXF and I'm trying to extrude the head-stock into 3D. When I select the head-stock geometry it also selects part of the actual neck, which isn't what I want, and a surface for extruding isn't detected.
I'm aware that my trouble may be that I just haven't yet grasped the basics of how ViaCAD works, and perhaps I need to spend more time just learning the basics. I have worked through most of the tutorials that come with the software, and haven't found anything in them that deals with this problem though.
If anyone has any advice or can point me in the direction of any training material I would be grateful.

Many thanks
Joram

Hi Joram

If you post a file with just the lines your are extruding, I might be able to make a video.

Hi, please see attached. It's just the peghead I'm trying to extrude at the moment although ultimately I'm trying to make a 3d model of the guitar neck
Thanks

When you do chain select the green is not selected. right there is a flag. When you zoom in you'll see the gap. See picture 2.

Hi Joram

Below is a video I made showing a potential method to clean up a DXF profile that may have issues. In the video I remove duplicates and repair intersecting curves to get a 3D model.

Rockyroad, Tim, thanks for your help and for the tutorial.
I have managed to follow your instructions and extrude the peghead, however when I work on the heel end and follow your instructions using the trim tool, it crashes.. every time. What am I doing wrong?
I've attached my working model in case it's any help
Thanks

Hi Joram

The line seems to trim fine here. I selected Line 54 as the trim to curve and Line 74 as the curve to trim. What build of ViaCAD do you have? Perhaps this is a former bug that has been fixed or I'm not repeating the steps correctly.

I'm using 1104. I've tried this over 20 times now and it still crashes. I'm pausing your video, making sure I'm selecting exactly the same lines as you and performing the same operations before moving onto the next bit.
Also going back to the peghead, I had to do lots of "join curve" operations after I'd deleted overlaying lines as shown in your video, it's odd because you didn't seem to need to do that to get it to extrude.

Can you update to a newer build using the Help : Current Version option?
