Could you expand on that "helix with a draft angle" comment. I can't picture that at the moment.

Hi Mike,

Of course.

Rather than just using one helix for the thread, you add a second helix with a draft angle for the thread lead out. Then sweep both helix.

Mov attached (this mov is an experiment as I Have changed my screen resolutiuon/ using camstudio for the capture. The mov resolution is also @1024X768. Let me know if any problems viewing..)

Hi all,

I did the nut threads following Steve advice, using the Subtract Solid tool.

(And Steve, off topics are bonus to me so they are welcomed.)

I am now trying to learn more about my ViaCad. It is fun but not easy for my poor brain. Most of the time I got unexpected results. :-)

What I like most is when I finally understand a new thing and discover new possibilities. Then, I go to bed happy (sometimes too late!)

Hi Luc,

Since you currently like to learn new stuff, here's an easy way to chamfer your nut...

I used a 30 triangle, revolved around the centerline of the nut...

There are many places where you can get dimensions for standard hardware on the internet if you don't want to buy the machinery handbook.

I've created my first movie, and converted it to quicktime's .mov format, same way as you do. But my file is huge... 18 megs for this nut for example. Any suggestions to make it smaller?

I have not checked the mov file as my gateway is currently blocking the site:- mikenchell.com. What is that site? I will need to check logs

What you should try:-
For screen capture, cut the color depth to max 8bit per channel(24 bit color depth max). Keep the frame rate to 15 frames or less.
When encoding(converting to mov) drop the quality but have multi-pass encoding.

With the help of these wonderful movies and great advices of yours I think I made a better draw of my nut.

Not yet the industry standard but better than my first try.

I am using Camstudio with the "Techsmith capture codec". fps set to 15.(pic01)

Steve,

I reviewed another program, Jing, which is put out by the same people as Camtasia. For $15 one can produce really compact, really high quality mp4 file that you can play in quicktime.

So I tried it. Here's an example...

It's 3 minutes and 23 seconds long, and it's only 8 megs. :)

Yes, it forces you to create an account. But you don't have to use that account. I save my files to my desktop, and then host them on my own server.

Yes, I was a little concerned about the 5 minute limit, but then I decided that I would probably only do short movies anyways.

For the high quality, and the small file size, it was worth spending $14.95. :rolleyes:

P.S. Can't you combine movies in Quicktime Pro?

Combining Two QuickTime Movies into One

With QuickTime Pro, you can easily add one movie to another to make one longer movie.
To combine two movies:

1. In QuickTime Player, choose Edit > Select All to select the entire contents of the first movie.
2. Choose Edit > Copy, then open the second movie.
3. Move the playhead to the point at which you want to insert the movie (usually the very beginning or end of the original movie), and choose Edit > Paste.
4. Choose File > Save As to name and save the new movie.

I am not really concerned with the small cost, just with the program wanting to connect out (which is probably every time you run it). Call me paranoid, but I am very security conscious and control all internet connections for my own use, I do not allow programs to connect out whenever they want to

I can workaround, using the camstudio lossless capture-> expand to RGB, convert to MOV. I will use that or go back to xvid, or stop making movies.

ACIS SAT is also a good format. Yes, I use McMaster for a long time. Is very useful.
