Hi,

when I move an 3d object in the front view I want it to only move in the z (up/down) and x (left/right) axis.

For the top view I only want to move things in the x (left/right) and y (near/far) axis.

For the left view I only want to move things on the y (near/far) and z (up down) axis.

This seems to me to be the only way to position an object in 3 dimensions quick and easy.

Why in heavens name does Viacad moves the objects, without having any control over the movement, on all 3 axis in any given view???

Or am I missing something?

Cheers, Daan

HI, Daan

What version of ViaCAD are you using?

When you hold the x y or z keys down it will restrict movement along those axis when you are moving objects

You can also use the translate tool and rotate tool to move/rotate objects a specified distance/angle in x y z.

In this app - unlike some others, your snaps are on by default

When you move an object, it's snapping to something in that third dimension and throwing you out

You could move as I do by entering numbers .. OR by clicking 2 points remotely (with the move tool) to represent the relative direction and distance you want to move

The 'logicursor' does give you cues as to which direction you are moving in (eg align_x) but no - it doesn't seem ideal

Suggest you could also try holding down the x, y or z keys to constrain your moves

I am using V6 build 786.

I get the object where I want them eventualy, but it aint easy.

Confining movement by holding down x, y or z doesnt always seem to work.

And the axis isnt always the axis I expect. The axis seems to switch around depending on the view I am in.

I visualise object like on my CNC mill. When standing in front of it x is left/right, y is far/near and z is up/down.

So when I have a left view I expect the y axis to be left/right on screen since I am standing on the left of my object looking down the x axis.

I just tried this:

in the left view my y-axis indeed is left to right on screen.

But when I grab the object with the y-key held down I can still move it on the z-axis and it also winds up being displaced on the x axis.

Daan,

Have you tried checking "work plane" in the snaps palette? When I am working in top, side, front view I often check this to be able to snap to objects in different planes but restrict all my movements to a single plane. Give it a try, it may do what you want.

Hi, Daan

You can also use the arrow keys to move an object left to right up and down by a set distance. Goto File --> Preferences --> General tab -->arrow key nudge distance. You can set a distance and when holding down the shift key and pressing the arrow keys its 10X the distance.

Pick the view you want then pick the work plane to correspond to the view you selected then make sure the object is selected and use the arrow keys to move.

Turn on in file menu workplane ---> show workplane to help see what workplane is set also.

I am moving a 3D object in the left view by grabbing an edge and dragging.

I want to restrict movement to the y-axis so I hold down the y-key before I grab the object and keep it pressed.

Next to the object it says 'along y' but nothing stops me from moving the object also on the z-axis.

With the arrow keys the screen scrolls, the object doesnt move (I am using a Mac with OS 10.5)

Agree with you that constraining xyz is a little confusing

There was a recently rectified issue with the constrain x,y,z keys - perhaps update to a more recent build if that's possible

To be quite sure your object does not move in the third dimension, use the move tool rather than the select tool - and then specify two points for the move - but do it away from your object on a clear bit of screen. That way you will not inadvertently snap to something

Or, of course - you could type the move distance into the move tool

Daan

If the object is not selected it will pan the view versus move the object.

In a flat view x is always horisontal and y is always vertical. Only in perspective view the correct axis constrain shortcut is working. I complained about this years ago but nobody seemed to agree. Perhaps now if we shout loud enough Tim will correct it.

Hello,

in perspective view:

Why? when I move an object by clicking on (Y) the object moves in the Z axis ....( )????

uncomfortable not?

clic X = axis X ===> ok
clic Y = axis Z ===> ? Why?
clic Z = axis Y ===> ? Why?

regards

Antoine

Also with the object selected the window scrolls and the object stays put.
