Is there anyway to wrap an image round a sphere?

Yes.
Make it a Decal. Making Decals is an involved process that requires a positive and negative mask, and for even decent results you need a high resolution image. I usually go for 300dpi. You can see an example decal (on a flat surface) [URL="http://forum.punchcad.com/showthread.php?t=1417"]here[/URL]. All of the graphics is a single decal. The bitmaped artwork was around 10mb.

Thanks Nick, but this will not work for what I had in mind as the decal only shows on rendering. I wanted to use an image in the same way Nick in the UK used the mountain bike picture in his tutorial. I was thinking about creating a sphere, wrapping an image of earth to it and then trace the outlines of the continents using the spline on a surface function.

Ryan is looking into adding this for lightworks photorendering for an upcoming FX beta. Currently it just works for opengl rendering.
