]I can't seem to split a solid with a plane & I can't do it with project curve to surface/solid. The outline of where the split should be shows up after the operation but no split. See attached. I've shut down and restarted but same results.

Hi Chuck

To split the solid use the split solid tool, the cut section tool creates a section view where your defined plane intersects the solid.

Hi Jason
Yes that tool works. I was trying initially to split the face as shown by Tim on YouTube at 45 seconds and on.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlGNHHg1tH8
What he does is he draws a line and imprints it on a solid with the "project curve to surface" tool. It's split the surface and can be used as the axis for rotating using the draft tool.
I tried that with my windows ops using Alt and Ctrl key and no luck yet. Does the "project curve to surface" imprint and split the surface for you? If I can make that work for me that would be real nice.

Hi Chuck

Yes, it splits faces, maybe its the projection vector that is being picked not giving you the results you want? See attached with red circles showing the projection vector points I picked and the different results.

When i have that problem, i find that it sometimes helps to draw an actual surface that extends beyond the edge of what is being cut.

If you are cutting or trimming or splitting a huge surface (say, 40 feet by 50 feet, with compound curves, originating from a mesh...) with many nodes, be careful on doing "undo". i sometimes get a bizarre ACIS error that takes enough ESC or OK presses that i put a book edge on the ESC key. But, one time that caused VCP to crash.... Save, and save OFTEN.

If you get a "file error/unable to open" message and then VCP closes the file open attempt, don't give up just yet. I just Monday AM had that and my heart sank as the file had not been backed up and i recently did 5 days of work on it. In desperation, i chose to just rename and then reattempt to open. Strangely, it worked.

Hi Jason
My problem all along has been that after splitting the face I thought I should be able to select that face. However the face can only be selected it seems when editing, for example a face can be selected when extruding or when using the face draft tool.
Problem solved now I get it!
Thanks for your help.
Chuck

Hi Chuck
You can use the deep select tool to pick faces, like if you want to change a face color, etc.
