Okay what gives,

Running Windows XP Pro SP3 with 4Gig DDR2 on a Phenom 3 core chipset. Trying to save regularly and have 7Gig of Hard drive as virtual RAM. Sytem will be running fine and then will just give a memory overflow and sieze up completely. Also a 512MB Video card PCI-E.

I have gotten to where I am saving after every little thin to try to avoid it. Right now I am putting bolt hole in a model so that the parts can be sent to be cut. This is something I need to find a solution to. Help please.

Let's start by making sure you are on the same build that I will test with.
What product and build number do you have? If not current, I'll send you the most current build.

I'm in VCP 7 build 967, with a 66mb file. Takes about a minute to open or to save. Running VCP in VirtualBox 3.2.12, in 32-bit Win 7 unpatched, with only 1.73 BG allocated to it, on a 4GB RAM (less some 256 mb allocated to the graphic chip), 64-bit, 2.4GHz laptop that is running a 32-bit Linux distro. When open, the file consumes about 600 mb of RAM. The original file is a ~500k or so 3D mesh and another 8MB 3D polylines file. I have a number of surfaces that I converted from mesh, and a number of solids.

Even if/when I upgrade to a another 64-bit laptop but one with a much better processor, I will still have to use a 32-bit version of windows because some software I'm using is not rebuilt to 64-bit due to licensing issues and tools issues.

I'm waiting for VCP 8....

running an OpenGL based 3D modeler under a virtualized operating system is never a good idea.
using an integrated video subsystem (shared memory) with an OpenGL based 3D modeler makes it not better.
32bit applications can be of course run under a 64bit Windows, otherwise many apps would never be usable with Win x64...

just mentioning,
Norbert

Well, I don't dual-boot, and the last time I natively used win on any of my personal computers for over an hour or to do any surfing, etc, was probably .... 2002. So long as VBox can run Windows stably, and so long as ms doesn't nuke it nor coerce the world into that trusted computing thing with those special BIOS chips they're purportedly pushing, and so long as CAD companies don't take to making their apps refuse to run in virtual machines, then I can continue to run VCP in a virtualized windows in VirtualBox.

Actually, I'm quite impressed that it works. I do concede that some weird issues in VCP might be due to translations in the kernel to VirtualBox, but they're not show-stoppers. Even though win 7 reports an experience index of "1" for graphics, the CPU and bus are higher.

Here are the values:

Processor 5.7
Memory 5.5
Graphics 1.0
Gaming Graphics 1.0
Primary Hard Drive 6.5

Scale is from 1.0 to 7.9

Maybe that the graphics are pretty good is due to Tim, ACIS, and others?

Tim,

Update. Most problems fixed. One item i have found that seems to help is after I get done using any 2D item to create a 3D object i go back and remove the 2D. Less headache that way and still get the heck for all the boolean shapes so might find even a btter solution down the road.

It will still go into memory overflow on some items and at times i have gotten a few other errors as well. Will gladly ship you a copy of the file I am working with if you wish. Other then that the only problem have been having is it will not export into IGES nor STP file format.

The project that I am working on is a Gantry Router frame/structure.

Again thanks for your response and will keep you up to date as possible.

Tim,

Saving very often and removing 2D artifact has helped a whole lot. Also only having visible the part of the item that I am working with at a time Lots of complex surfaces in some of the stuff I am working on for such a simple item.

Also uninstalled C++ 2005 and did a clean reinstall of the parts needed to be up to date and that helped as well got rid of duplicate copies of files. Removing 2D artifact has also helped in exporting to STEP.

The only problem these days is that when closing ViaCAD 2D/3Dv8 it will crash out for no unknown reason.

I can tell when it is going to go into memory over flow as the RAM usage starts to climb and usually hits about 3.35G of RAM used when it will kick out (system is XP Pro SP3 with 4G DDR2 and 3.5G of virtual RAM on ).

I can send some additional files that I have had issues with. outside of that really like the program as it is saving me loads of time. What would take 2 days to get fully done with the program I was using is now done in 3 to 5 hours.

Again thanks for looking into it and looking forward to using your folks products for a good long while.

I believe I found and fixed this one yesterday. The correction is in all 996 builds of ViaCAD and Shark.
